The totality of the work involves a process of reminders. A painting is a reminder, as is a poem. They are reminders of what is; what is here, and what is going on.
The poems-
The words speak. Realization is found in the words. They seek truth and abundance, to venture into haziness and return with something to hold, warm like a tea mug. A topic meditated upon often sprouts into expression of words. Sounds and cadences, rhymes and meanings interplay moving a thread along, providing a deepening, a clarity, or a conclusion. In many of the poems, a process happens that pulls on memories and associations, sensations, and imagined imagery, infused with possibility. In other poems, a much more literal description seeks to illuminate a principle or emotional space. In certain poems I like there to be several readings available at once as I find that that helps to reconcile several ideas or realities and avoid an overly rigid stance. When read, I hope that the poems bring a sense of relief or productive contemplation to the reader as they often provide so generously in writing.
The nature paintings-
Nature is essential to us. The paintings speak of what is found in greenery, in the beautiful and the sometimes seemingly ordinary or overlooked elements of the world. It is true that when we live busy lives, our attention moves to our duties, while our awareness of intricate and special details of the streets and the trees, the flowers, and other natural beings can dim. But this needn’t stay the case. The paintings seek to wake the senses to what surrounds- growth and greenery, and beauty, much of it.
Producing the work awakens. The work unfolds best when performed lightly, loosely, and freely; without too much pressure or expectation. The process takes counsel with nature, allowing the forces of a space, object, or being to clarify awareness. In creating the paintings, the sensation that a scene is alive attracts. When a moment’s specialness and aliveness call out, its energy sparks the birth of a piece. This energy is then channeled into the painting.
Composition and texture are key tools in describing the places depicted. The sensation of color is foundational. Style flits and morphs to respect the truth of each moment depicted and to respond to the particular circumstances of each scene. I intend for the work to transmit a scene’s life and pulse to the viewer, to capture attention, and to foster a sense of beauty. When purchased, I sincerely hope that the work brings the same sense of beauty, vigor, peace, and inspiration to the client’s space that I come upon in production and composition.
